Clinical trials:

In MHATNP “St. Naum” have been successfully functioning three centers for clinical trials of new medicines for about 10 years which participated and are participating in dozens multi-centers international clinical trials from every stage of development of psychotropic medications. The centers have highly specialized, trained and experienced teams of doctors and medical nurses, working in accordance with all the good clinical practice requirements.

The clinical centers have the capacity, expertise and experience for work in the following directions:

  1. Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (first episode of psychosis, exacerbations, cognitive deficits, baseline conditions).
  2. Bipolar affective disorder type I and II - mania and hypomania episodes.
  3. Major (unipolar, bipolar, psychotic, geronotopsychiatric) depressive episode.
  4. Obsessive-compulsive disorders.
  5. Anxiety disorders

1938 year
In the area of Forth kilometer (Chetvurti Kilometur) began to operate a private psychiatric clinic with 40 beds of Dr. Lyuben Rusev and Dr. Lyuba Ruseva
An electroshock and insulin coma therapy were applied.
1949 – 1951 year
A psychiatric department with 70 beds forms to ISUL headed by
by Prof. Dr. Trayko Zapryanov.
On this basis later develops the Scientific Research Institute of Neurology and Psychiatry.
1951 year
A Scientific Research Psychoneurological Institute is established.
A Neurological department with 50 beds (based in ISUL) and Department of Psychiatry with 70 beds (based at the Forth Kilometer).
Directors: Prof. E. Sharankov, Prof. G. Nastev.
1956 year
A Scientific Research Institute of Neurology and Psychiatry
Neurological department with 50 beds (based in ISUL) and Department of Psychiatry with 70 beds (based at the Forth Kilometer). Prof. Vl. Ivanov introduces the Sleeping therapy.

In the Scientific Research Institute are formed: Neurological sector with 140 beds in 4 departments (Fourth Kilometer); psychiatric sector, consisting of 2 clinics with more than 250 beds - the one with 70 beds situated at the Fourth Kilometer (first psychiatry clinic), and the other - located at the base of Psychiatry Hospital Kurilo (Novi Iskur), with more than 170 beds (second psychiatry clinic); a neurosurgery department which had been existing until the year of 1973.
